The 5 Buckets of Well-Being: A Simple Way to Check In With Yourself

The 5 Buckets of Well-Being: A Simple Way to Check In With Yourself

The 5 Buckets of Well-Being: A Simple Way to Check In With Yourself…reflections from your Dallas therapist

What actually helps us feel well, not just functional, but genuinely fulfilled?

Surprisingly, it’s not one thing. It’s many. And when life feels off, it’s often because one of our internal “buckets” is running low—sometimes without us even realizing it.

That’s where the PERMA model from Positive Psychology comes in. Developed by Dr. Martin Seligman, PERMA offers a helpful framework for understanding the five essential areas that contribute to well-being:

Positive Emotions. Engagement. Relationships. Meaning. Accomplishment.

Let’s walk through each one—and gently check in with which of your buckets might need a refill.

1. Positive Emotions

This is the joy bucket.

Not about being happy all the time—but making space for moments of gratitude, peace, hope, humor, or even relief.

When this bucket is low, you might feel stuck in survival mode—like you’re going through the motions without feeling much at all.

💡 Check-in: When was the last time I felt joy, comfort, or ease—even briefly?

2. Engagement

This is the presence bucket.

It’s about those moments when you’re so immersed in something—reading, painting, helping, building—that you lose track of time.

That sense of flow reconnects you with your creativity, curiosity, and energy.

💡 Check-in: When do I feel most “in it,” grounded, or fully alive?

3. Relationships

This is the connection bucket.

We are wired for belonging. Supportive, nurturing relationships help us feel seen, safe, and understood.

When this bucket is low, you might feel isolated—even when you’re not alone.

💡 Check-in: Who helps me feel more like myself? When did I last reach out?

4. Meaning

This is the purpose bucket.

It’s the feeling that your life is part of something bigger—whether it’s your values, your work, your family, or your faith.

When this bucket is empty, life can feel directionless or hollow, even if everything looks “fine” from the outside.

💡 Check-in: What gives my life meaning right now? What do I care deeply about?

5. Accomplishment

This is the progress bucket.

It’s about setting goals—big or small—and seeing them through. Even small wins help build confidence and momentum.

When this bucket is low, it’s easy to feel stuck, discouraged, or behind.

💡 Check-in: What am I proud of lately? Where could I give myself more credit?

Final Thoughts: You Don’t Have to Fill Every Bucket at Once

No one has all five buckets full every day. That’s not the goal.

But noticing what’s low gives you a starting point. And that self-awareness is where real change begins.

If you’re in a place where things feel off but you’re not quite sure why, the PERMA model can be a powerful tool for checking in with yourself. And if you’re feeling drained across the board, therapy can offer support, clarity, and space to start refilling—gently, intentionally, and at your own pace.
